An Illinois man is facing felony murder charges after he allegedly stabbed a young mother to death at a train station in Chicago.
The killing unfolded last Thursday afternoon at South Chicago’s Green Line station, with reports claiming suspect Willie Holmes, 54, had spat on the woman, Emily Carlson, 25, and had had a verbal altercation with her and her boyfriend that escalated into a fight shortly before the stabbing.
From The Chicago Sun-Times:
Police, who had a description of the attacker, followed him into a store at 345 N. Central Ave. after the stabbing, where he was arrested, the report said.
CTA video and private video showed footage of the suspect, who was identified by several witnesses as the person who spit on Carlson before pulling out a knife and stabbing her in the “upper left back” when the victim’s boyfriend confronted him, the report said.
Carlson was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Holmes had a lengthy criminal history, the Sun-Times reports, that included “drug charges, battery, traffic violations and shoplifting mostly in the 1990s and early 2000s.”
Holmes is being charged with one felony count of first-degree murder.
Carlson’s family wrote her “infectious smile and laugh will be profoundly missed by those lucky enough to have experienced this joy. She brought love and happiness to so many and will be dearly missed.”
Emily leaves behind two sons, aged five and two weeks old.
