A bizarre contest pits man versus man to determine whose sperm is more fertile, in a new competition attempting to bring attention to crashing male fertility rates.
The first-ever “sperm race” will be hosted at the Hollywood Paladium in Los Angeles on Friday April 25, complete with audience, 4K cameras, commentary and a microscopic race track, as the contest’s creators say it’s a clever way to spotlight the existential crisis for men.
“Sperm racing isn’t just a joke,” the group behind the effort, Sperm Racing, says in a manifesto on its site. “It’s not just some viral idea for the internet to laugh at. It’s something much bigger. Male fertility is declining.”
“Like, a lot. It’s happening quietly, steadily, and nobody’s really talking about it.”
The company says their specially-designed racetrack “mimics the reproductive system—chemical signals, fluid dynamics, synchronized starts,” to test sperm motility, the speed at which sperm travels, a major fertility factor.
“The winner? The sperm that crosses the finish line first, verified by advanced imaging.”
“Sperm racing isn’t just about racing sperm (although, let’s be honest, that’s hilarious),” SpermRacing.com wrote on its site. “It’s about turning health into a competition. It’s about making male fertility something people actually want to talk about, track, and improve.”
The company has released a UFC-style promo for Friday’s event, showcasing the face-off between its first two competitors, college students Asher (UCLA) vs Tristan (USC).
The event couldn’t have come sooner, as recent studies show sperm counts have dropped 59 percent worldwide over the past 50 years.
