A previously-deported illegal alien with several outstanding felony warrants was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a neighbor in an upscale enclave on Lake Michigan.
On Friday, local media published details about the bust, which took place on March 31 in Charlevoix, a small Michigan city with around 2,400 residents.
The Charlevoix Police Department (CPD) received a report that a man had been assaulted by a male suspect residing in basement apartments rented by a local construction company.
Prosecution was not pursued in the alleged assault, however, officers encountered three aliens with dubious immigration statuses residing in one of the apartments, including the suspected attacker.
The men, none of whom possessed U.S. documentation, were identified as two Colombian nationals, ages 24 and 42, and a 42-year-old Mexican national named Jose Miguel Hernandez Carrera.
CPD sent all their information to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who confirmed the Mexican was an illegal alien of interest.
CPD Chief Jill McDonnell told the Petoskey News-Review that Hernandez Carrera “had previously been deported twice and had served time for illegal reentry. He also had felony warrants out of California and Indiana — one for burglary and another for a dangerous drug offense — as well as a past drunk driving offense in Minnesota.”

ICE officers arrived in Charlevoix to question the men and a standoff ensued when Hernandez Carrera locked them out of the apartment.
ICE obtained a federal search warrant and eventually gained access to the residence and took Hernandez Carrera into custody.
“The 42-year-old Colombian had registered through the immigration portal and has a hearing scheduled in 2026 or 2027,” Chief McDonnell explained. “The 24-year-old had not registered but was told to do so within two weeks or ICE would follow up.”
Hernandez Carrera had been living in Charlevoix for roughly a year and had interacted with city officials on several occasions for administrative matters.
Hernandez Carrera was held in ICE custody pending removal proceedings but little more information about his whereabouts, or those of the Colombians, has been made public.
